Many Kachin and other ethnic groups from Myanmar united in front of Chiang Mai’s Burmese embassy to protest against the military coup of February 1st, 2021. Due to social distancing regulations, protesters were required to wear facemasks and keep their distance. It is unknown why Thai police actively blocked protesters from close proximity of the embassy building.
This protest was one of many worldwide, which occurred in opposition to the new military regime. The protesters main demand is the restoration of democracy and the release of NLD leader Aung San Suu Kyi.
